T-Mobile Accelerates Innovation and Customer Experience with Azure-powered Analytics

As T-Mobile merged with Sprint’s networks, the company relied on advanced analytics to ensure a smooth transition and deliver a better customer experience.

T-Mobile partnered with Microsoft Azure to address significant data management challenges during its 2020 merger with Sprint.

The company needed to handle multi-petabyte-scale data volumes while ensuring scalability and delivering real-time insights into network performance and customer experience.

The primary hurdles included ingesting over 800 terabytes of data daily, unifying more than 60 disparate data sources, and processing trillions of records to generate actionable intelligence. To overcome these, T-Mobile adopted Azure Data Explorer as the core platform for high-speed data ingestion, querying, and analysis, enabling real-time visibility across its operations.

This was complemented by integrations with Azure Databricks for advanced data processing, Azure Data Lake Storage for scalable storage solutions, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) for orchestration, and Power BI for intuitive visualization and reporting.

The results have been transformative. T-Mobile achieved enhanced network monitoring and faster issue resolution, leading to improved overall performance. The solution increased data usability and agility, empowering innovation in customer personalization. It also established a strong foundation for AI-driven initiatives, delivering tangible benefits such as optimized data pipelines and deeply personalized customer experiences.

As Anand Muttayane from T-Mobile noted, “Microsoft has been a valuable co-innovation collaborator… we’ve optimized our data pipelines and improved network performance, delivering measurable benefits directly to our customers.”

Peter Huang added, “With Azure, T-Mobile has a solid foundation for our ongoing AI journey… ensuring that T-Mobile can continue delivering a deeply personalized experience across the entire network.”

Azure Data Explorer

Azure Data Explorer (ADX), also known as Kusto, is a fully managed, high-performance data analytics service provided by Microsoft Azure.

It is specifically designed for real-time analysis of large volumes of streaming and batch data, such as logs, telemetry, time-series data, and IoT signals. ADX excels in scenarios requiring low-latency queries over petabyte-scale datasets, making it ideal for observability, security analytics, fraud detection, and business intelligence.
